Learning from New York: New Urbanism in China

As cities around the world strive to realize the environment and economic benefits of density without the sacrifice of community, the success of New York pre-war urbanism has much to teach us. Architect Paul Whalen, Partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, will present how these lessons guide his work both at home in the US and in China’s rapidly growing cities to create responsible, engaging human-scaled urbanism from skywalk to skyline.

Paul Whalen, AIA, joined Robert A.M. Stern Architects in 1981 and has been a Partner of the firm since 1989. During this time, he has been responsible for the design and management of projects including the record-setting 15 Central Park West; his current New York projects include 520 Park Avenue for Zeckendorf Development, 30 Park Place for Silverstein Properties, 220 Central Park South for Vornado, and 20 East End Avenue for Corigin. He was partner-in-charge of two of the most influential planning projects of our time: the new town of Celebration, Florida, and a plan and guidelines that revived the theater block of New York City's 42nd Street. As the firm’s practice has diversified, its geographical scope has widened to include projects in throughout the United States, as well as in South America, Europe, and Asia, where Mr. Whalen has projects  currently under way in Shanghai, Xiamen, Changzhou, Dalian, Chongqing, Jinjiang, Beijing, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Singapore.
Mr. Whalen graduated from Columbia University and received his Master of Architecture degree from Princeton University. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Board of Directors of the New York Chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism.
