It has been said that "data is the oil of the 21st century" yet there is a broad range of Data Science investments within Private Equity with some PE firms having large, well staffed teams while other firms have yet to invest in this area. In this panel, Data Scientists working in Private Equity will discuss how Data Science is currently providing value as well as the challenges and future opportunities for Data Science applications in Private Equity.  And, network with the speakers and fellow alums in the PE industry before and after the presentation and breakfast!

Bios

Dr. Howard Friedman is the Chief Data Scientist at DataMed Solutions LLC and Analytic Solutions LLC where he leverages his decades of experience in leading data-driven value creation for PE firms, Fortune 500 companies and smaller firms. A former director at Capital One, he teaches data analytics at Columbia University. He wrote a NY Times-identified “Best Book of 2012” focusing on data-driven policy recommendations. He has a MS in Statistics and a Ph.D. in Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.






Tim Kiely works as Lead Data Scientist for American Securities, a private equity firm with approximately $15 billion AUM. Tim works both on the investment decision side, where he helps identify growth opportunities in  potential acquisition companies, and the portfolio company operations side, where he works to unlock value through predictive modeling, machine learning, and optimization. Prior to joining American Securities, Tim was Lead Data Scientist at Hodges Ward Elliott, a commercial real estate investment company. Before that he worked in AIG’s Data Science Group. Tim received a BA in International Relations from Williams College and an Masters in Data Science from Northwestern University.





Dr. Matt Oefinger is the Chief Analytics Officer at Deerfield Management, a private equity firm that focuses on the healthcare space with over $8 billion AUM.  Matt works directly with all business units to drive strategic, operational, and financial direction, as well as new product development, specifically in intersection of engineering and medicine to serve a direct market need.  He previously served as the Chief Analytics Officer at Adeptus Health as well as the Chief Technology Officer for OZ Systems and Watermark Medical LLC.  Matt holds a Masters and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science from MIT.
