Startup Finance: What It Takes to Fund a Business with Dean Hubbard and Entrepreneurs


Q & A Discussion with Dean Glenn Hubbard

Inspired by Dean Hubbard's blockbuster course that uses a two-pronged approach to the study of entrepreneurial finance, this discussion will focus on the financing decisions of entrepreneurs.  It will delve into principles of corporate finance, valuation, and coordination and control of firms, with an eye toward developing the tools and concepts of entrepreneurial financial management.  Led by an angel investor and CNBC's Power Pitch panelist Alicia Syrett '07, it will survey the major questions faced by the great majority of would-be founders and probe for possible solutions.

Following Dean Hubbard, four Columbia Business School entrepreneurs will share personal stories of how some of the discussed concepts can be applied in practice.  Founders of the following companies will reveal what helped them become the mainstay of the entrepreneurial revolution:

Bios:

Glenn Hubbard was named dean of Columbia Business School on July 1, 2004. A Columbia faculty member since 1988, he is also the Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics. Professor Hubbard received his BA and BS degrees summa cum laude from the University of Central Florida, where he received the National Society of Professional Engineers Award. He also holds AM and PhD degrees in economics from Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard, Professor Hubbard began his teaching career at Northwestern University, moving to Columbia in 1988. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Business School as well as the University of Chicago. Professor Hubbard also held the John M. Olin Fellowship at the National Bureau of Economic Research. In addition to writing more than 100 scholarly articles in economics and finance, Professor Hubbard is the author of three popular textbooks, as well as co-author of The Aid Trap: Hard Truths About Ending Poverty, Balance: The Economics of Great Powers From Ancient Rome to Modern America, and Healthy, Wealthy & Wise: Five Steps to a Better Health Care System. His commentaries have appeared in Business Week, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Financial Times, the Washington Post, Nikkei, and the Daily Yomiuri, as well as on television and radio. Professor Hubbard and his family live in New York.


Moderator: Alicia Syrett '07 is the founder/CEO of Pantegrion Capital, an angel investment vehicle focused on seed and early stage investments, and The Point 25 Initiative. She is a recurring panelist on CNBC’s Power Pitch and MSNBC’s Your Business, a Contributor for Inc. magazine, and an Instructor for Steve Blank’s Lean Launchpad course at Columbia University. She serves on the Board of the NY Tech Alliance and was named as one of the “30 Women in Venture Capital to Watch in 2018” by Business Insider,  one of the “25 Angel Investors in New York You Need to Know” by AlleyWatch, one of Wharton's "40 Under 40", and one of Virgin’s “Five Next Generation Leaders Emerging from Tech.” Prior to founding Pantegrion, she was the first employee and CAO of a multi-billion dollar private equity firm. Chris Riccobono
 '07 is the founder and Executive Chairman of UNTUCKit, one of the fastest-growing men’s retail brands in the country. Struggling to find a button down shirt that fit correctly and still looked polished when worn untucked, Chris realized that he was not alone in that challenge and founded UNTUCKit in 2011 to fill this void in the market. After extensive testing, Chris designed UNTUCKit’s signature shirt with perfectly-contoured hemlines and a tailored fit specifically designed to be worn untucked. By doing so, he created a way for men to look smart and polished while still being casual and comfortable. Responding to consumer demand, UNTUCKit has evolved to outfit the whole family with the introduction of a women’s line in Spring 2017 and a children’s line in Fall 2017. One of the most active e-commerce store expansions stories of 2017, UNTUCKit is opening 20 locations this year, with plans to open an additional 25 in 2018, including an international expansion. Riccobono achieved his undergraduate degree at Providence College in 2001 and attended Columbia Business School in 2007. 


Aaron Sanandres '07 is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of UNTUCKit, one of the fastest-growing men’s retail brands in the country. The first company to launch with a signature style specifically designed to be worn untucked, the brand created a way for men to look smart and polished while still being casual and comfortable. Aaron was previously at PricewaterhouseCoopers for 17 years. He received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College and pursued an MBA at Columbia Business School.

 

 

Donnel Baird '13 is the founder of BlocPower, a startup that uses analytics, machine learning, and structured finance to help cities, utilities, and medium sized building owners to leverage smart technologies and renewable energy to reduce $50bn of annual energy waste. Donnel spent three years as a community organizer in Brooklyn and one year as a voter contact director for Obama For America. Donnel has a BA from Duke University and an MBA from Columbia Business School, and is a Board Director of the Sierra Club Foundation. Donnel lives in Brooklyn with his wife and son, and is a perpetually disappointed fan of the New York Knicks.

 

Matt Bachmann '15, is the co-founder of Wandering Bear Coffee. In 2013, Matt Bachmann walked into a Uris Hall classroom carrying a travel mug of homemade cold brew coffee and met Ben Gordon '15, who was sitting with a leather-wrapped mason jar filled with his own homebrew. This set the two off on what has now been a four year journey to create the best-tasting cold brew coffee products possible while staying differentiated in a fast-changing category.

 

Gabby Slome '16 is the co-founder of Ollie.  With vast experience in the worlds of business and e-commerce and a lifelong passion for animals, Gabby set about revolutionizing the dog food industry by improving the lives of its actual four-legged consumers. Growing up in New York City, she became an equestrian at a young age, developing an unconditional love for all animals of all kinds. Graduating from Columbia University and Columbia Business School, she proved integral to the growth of companies such as Karmaloop, vente-privee USA, and Primary.com in executive roles. Prior to the launch of Ollie, she served as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Primary Ventures. She translated this experience into a launchpad for her company, and it immediately resonated with audiences—furry and unfurry alike. When she’s not forever changing the face of the dog food world, she’s doting on her rescue Pancho who “found” her during a hike in Colombia. Outside of Ollie, Gabby remains a travel and workout enthusiast.
