Vikram Pandit Speaks: How Fintech is Impacting Financial Services

 

We are honored to have Vikram Pandit, former Chairman and CEO of Citigroup, speak about Fintech’s impact on the financial services industry.  Mr. Pandit, PhD ’86 and former Chairman and CEO of Citigroup, is now founder and CEO of Orogen Group, which invests in financial services companies.  He is a member of the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School. 

Fintech is disrupting nearly every area of the financial industry at an ever-increasing pace.  According to a 2016 PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report quoted in the Columbia Business School Fall 2017 Magazine, investment in Fintech rose from $5.6B in 2014 to $12.2B in 2015. 

Mr. Pandit’s talk will cover payments, lending, saving/wealth management, insurance, and real estate. 

His talk will be moderated by Prof. Stephen Zeldes, the Benjamin M. Rosen Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business, who is developing a new financial technology curriculum at the School.

Bios


Vikram S. Pandit

Vikram S. Pandit is Chairman and CEO of The Orogen Group, an operating company he created with Atairos Group that invests in financial services companies and related businesses. Mr. Pandit joined Morgan Stanley in 1983 and became President and COO of the company's institutional securities and investment banking businesses. He left Morgan Stanley to become a founding member and chairman of the members committee of Old Lane, LP. When Citigroup acquired Old Lane in 2007, Mr. Pandit became Chairman and CEO of Citi Alternative Investments and later led Citi's Institutional Clients Group. He became CEO of Citigroup in December 2007 and led the company during the recent financial crisis, successfully recapitalizing, restructuring and revitalizing the company before he left in October 2012. Mr. Pandit is a member of the Board of Directors of Virtusa Corporation, Fair Square Financial Holdings, JM Financial Credit Solutions Ltd., and Bombardier Inc. Mr. Pandit is a member of the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School. Mr. Pandit earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering from Columbia University and received his Ph.D. in finance from Columbia in 1986.



Stephen P. Zeldes

Stephen P. Zeldes is the Benjamin M. Rosen Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business.

He served as chair of the school’s Finance and Economics division from 2014-17.  In his research, Professor Zeldes has examined a wide range of applied issues in both macroeconomics and household finance, including saving behavior, social security reform, pension policy, retirement account portfolio choices, and annuitization and retirement security. His research has been published in the leading academic journals. Professor Zeldes’ teaching includes courses in macroeconomics, an interdisciplinary course titled “The Psychology and Economics of Consumer Finance,” and a class titled “FinTech: Consumer Financial Services.” In 2012, he was a recipient of the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in a Core Course, and in 2013 he received the Dean’s Award for Innovation in the Curriculum.

Professor Zeldes is a Research Associate and co-director of the Working Group on Household Finance at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Pension Research Council, a fellow at the TIAA-CREF Institute, and was a member of the New York City Retirement Security Study Group (formed by the Comptroller in 2015). Prior to joining the Columbia faculty in 1996, Zeldes was a Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He received his PhD in economics from MIT in 1984 and his bachelor’s degree in economics and applied mathematics from Brown University in 1978.
