THE COLLAPSE OF LEHMAN BROTHERS:
A Colossal Failure of Common Sense
Author Larry McDonald, former VP of distressed debt at Lehman Bros., in an an engaging talk about the firm's demise. Event Date: Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 at 6:00pm
Why was it allowed to fail? We all lived through it, but author Larry McDonald, a leading author and speaker, gives the inside story of the collapse of Lehman Brothers. His talk reveals the unspoken rules of the culture, the foibles of the leaders, and the helpless, angry uncertainty of the traders who saw it coming and tried to react. We are reintroduced to the leaders at the top, whose addiction to growth and leverage demolished the nation's oldest investment bank, with aftershocks that rocked the global economy. The full significance of the Lehman bankruptcy remains to be measured. But this much is certain: it was a devastating blow to America's financial system, and it need not have happened. Larry McDonald's talk is the story of why it did. About our speaker: Lawrence (Larry) McDonald is a managing director of Pangea Capital Management LP. Until 2008, he was vice president of distressed debt and convertible securities trading at Lehman Brothers, where he was one of Lehman's most consistently profitable traders. McDonald is also cofounder of Convertbond.com, named by Forbes magazine as "Best of the Web" from 2000 to 2003.
